Tax documents and IRS faxing

Where to find the right IRS fax number, what to include, and how to avoid failed transmissions.

Can I fax documents to the IRS?

Yes, for workflows that accept fax (EIN applications, some POA filings, notice responses when the letter says so). Always use the fax number on your IRS notice or the form instructions—not a number from memory.

How do I find the correct IRS fax number?

Use the number on your letter, or the verified numbers in our directory (with the date we checked them and a link to the IRS source).

Should I fax an original Form 1040?

Generally no. Original returns are usually e-filed or mailed unless an IRS unit specifically instructs you to fax.

What should be in the packet?

One PDF when you can: cover sheet → IRS notice (if any) → your form → supporting docs. Put your name, notice number, tax year, and page count on the cover. Prefer last-four identifiers over full SSNs on the cover.

Electronic signatures on Form 2848

The IRS says a Form 2848 with an electronic signature must be submitted online, not faxed. Fax only a handwritten signature for that form.
