FAQ / Faxing medical records
Faxing medical records
What to send, how to format it, and how to reduce privacy risks when faxing medical documents.
Can I fax medical records?
Often yes—clinics, insurers, and offices still use fax. Confirm the recipient’s workflow; some require a portal or a specific cover sheet.
What should the cover sheet include?
The minimum identifiers the recipient asks for (often name and date of birth or a patient ID), sender contact info, recipient office, fax number, and page count. Avoid extra sensitive details on the cover.
Is faxing medical records “HIPAA compliant”?
HIPAA depends on your organization’s safeguards and whether a business associate agreement is required. Faxette does not currently offer a BAA. If you handle PHI as a covered entity, check with your compliance team before using a consumer fax service.
How do I reduce privacy risk?
Double-check the fax number, avoid public Wi‑Fi, keep the cover minimal, and save the delivery confirmation. Guest files on Faxette are deleted 48 hours after the final status.
