Faxing legal documents

Cover pages, confirmations, deadlines, and what to do if a court fax fails.

Do courts accept faxed documents?

Often yes, but rules vary by jurisdiction and document type. Check local rules and any e-filing requirements before you rely on fax for a filing deadline.

What should a legal cover page include?

Recipient, sender contact info, date, total pages, case or matter identifier, and a confidentiality notice when appropriate.

How do I prove I sent it?

Save the Faxette delivery email and keep a copy of the exact PDF packet you sent, including the cover page. Delivery confirms the pages reached a fax machine at that number—not that a clerk has filed them.

What if the fax fails near a deadline?

Retry during clerk hours if the line is busy, confirm the number by phone, and use a backup method your court allows (e-filing, in person, or mail). See why your fax failed.
